Linear Flow
Royal Caribbean Spectrum of the Seas - Main Dining Room Sculpture
Sculpture: Linear Flow
Artist: Sola / Peter Medlicott
Commissioned as the centerpiece sculpture of the latest Royal Caribbean Quantum Class Cruise Ship the Spectrum of the Seas.
Linear Flow is a Light Art sculpture that descends through three layers of luxury retail and into the main dining room at the very heart of the ship.
Intended to never be seen the same twice, the sculpture, designed by myself especially for the cruise ship, gently rotates on its axis revealing unique views and perspectives from the near endless vantage points.
Linear Flow takes inspiration from my light painting work and draws on my wider influences in sculpture: The surface of the abstracted helictical form, itself reminiscent of eroded sea shells, is adorned with a modern interpretation of the ancient Asian gilding technique ‘Keum Boo’ featuring the distressed metallic golds and silvers.
Woven around the entire form is a complex geometric web of golden cord that creates an ephemeral second surface of gentle contours and intriguing planes which play with the main form. From afar the appearance of the web is subtle and it is only as you approach that its complex forms become clearer.
